Pair this rod (64XH) with high-capacity, high-drag reels (e.g., Maxel Rage Pro 130 or Accurate BV2-1000-SPJ) capable of handling up to 30 lbs of drag.
Line:
Spool with 80-100 lb braided line, ideally a metered line like Power Pro Depth Hunter Offshore to track exact strike depths.
Leaders: Use a 60-100 lb fluorocarbon leader for daytime and step up to a heavy 200-300 lb leader at night to withstand abrasion.
Jigs:
Match the rod with heavy, compact tungsten or knife jigs (200g-500g). Tungsten jigs sink faster and have a smaller profile, making them highly effective for SoCal Bluefin.
Technique:
Drop the jig deep into the water column and aggressively work it to mimic injured baitfish. Nighttime jigging is highly productive because baitfish rise in the water column.
